Blurry Vision That Comes and Goes: When to Get Checked

Vision that clears after a few blinks or becomes blurry at certain times of day can be easy to dismiss. However, recurring changes deserve attention, even when your eyesight returns to normal. At Norwood Family Eye Care in Bartlett, TN, we help patients understand what may be affecting their vision and determine the next steps for care.

Why Your Vision May Fluctuate

Dry eye is one possible cause of blurry vision that comes and goes. Your tear film helps keep the front surface of your eyes smooth. When tears evaporate too quickly or do not work properly, vision can become less consistent. Burning, grittiness, or redness may occur alongside the blur. Extended screen use can contribute because you may blink less often.

Blood sugar changes can also affect vision by changing fluid levels in the eye’s focusing lens. For people with diabetes, blurry vision should not automatically be attributed to a temporary blood sugar shift. Diabetes can also damage the retina, sometimes before noticeable symptoms develop.

When to Schedule an Eye Exam

We recommend contacting our Bartlett office when blurry vision keeps returning, interferes with reading or other daily activities, or represents a change from your usual eyesight. You do not need to wait until the blur becomes constant.

An eye exam can help determine whether you need an updated prescription or an evaluation for an eye health condition. Improvement after blinking or resting does not, by itself, establish the cause. Tell us when symptoms began so we can help determine how quickly you should be seen.

Symptoms That Need Immediate Attention

Some vision changes require urgent evaluation. Seek immediate eye care or emergency care if you experience:

  • Sudden, significant blurring or partial or complete vision loss, even if it clears

  • New flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a curtain-like shadow

  • Blurry vision with severe eye pain, redness, halos, or nausea

  • Sudden double vision, even if it is temporary

These symptoms can signal conditions that threaten sight and should not wait for a routine appointment.

If vision changes occur with facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, or a sudden severe headache, call 911 immediately. Do not drive yourself or wait to see whether symptoms improve.

What to Share During Your Visit

We want to know whether the blur affects one eye or both, how long each episode lasts, and what you are doing when it starts. Mention any discomfort, headaches, contact lens use, medication changes, or history of diabetes.

Bring your current glasses and a medication list. A brief record of recurring episodes can help guide our evaluation, but do not delay urgent care to collect details. Depending on your symptoms, we may assess your prescription, tear film, eye pressure, and internal eye health, including dilation when appropriate.
